Can Better
Concrete Give Us Better Air?...Yes.
Not many people realize that concrete is
the most used man-made product on earth.
Each year, 2.5 billion tons of new
cement is produced and used as a key
ingredient to make concrete.
However, for every ton of cement
produced, there a ton of CO2 is
generated! This makes concrete a big
contributor to CO2 emissions; more than
5% of the annual total! More
importantly, this creates a big
opportunity for CO2 reduction. By
using a concrete with a significantly
reduced CO2 footprint, we can all make a
bold and measurable step forward in
reducing global warming. If that same
concrete is more durable and higher
performance, then we can reduce the
long-term costs of infrastructure.
2X Green provides twice the durability
and up to a 70% reduction in CO2 when
compared to standard concretes used in
drainage and underground infrastructure.
Clearly, the better choice.
Why is
Durability in Concrete Important...and
Can it Really Be Measured?
Simply speaking, high performance
concrete (HPC) is really concrete that
is just much more durable.
Durability is important in concrete
because the more durable a concrete, the
more resistant it is to corrosion, and
the more resistant it is to corrosion,
the longer it will last.
The
US Federal Highway
Administration (FHWA) has
been a long-time proponent of HPC for
(above-ground) bridges and highways
because of the increased durability.
In the highly corrosive environments of
drainage and underground infrastructure,
increased durability
¾ and therefore longer service
life ¾ is
absolutely critical.
The most common measure of concrete
durability is the Rapid Chloride
Permeability test (ASTM C-1202).
An alternative measurement method is ACI
Life 365. By any measure, 2X Green
is a winner. More than twice as
durable than concretes that are normally
specified for drainage and related
applications.
CWR Delivers an
Integrated Solution, ‘User-Friendly’ and
Affordable Alternative
CWR supplies blended cements that are of
consistent mix design, testing,
certification, quality control and
technical support to ensure the concrete
solution will meet the asset owner’s
most aggressive performance
specifications.
This turn-key alternative avoids the
unsustainable approach that requires
each architect, engineer and asset owner
(as well as the local precast and/or
ready-mix firm) to become “expert” in
SCM’s, sourcing, mix design, and
testing. Rather, it allows these
parties to specify durability, service
life and other performance
characteristics that are relevant to the
specific application (e.g., manholes,
utility vaults, bridges, etc.) and do so
with the confidence that they can
receive the most durable, green
infrastructure from local sources.
CWR delivers results to architects,
engineers, asset owners, governments,
precast/ready-mix companies, taxpayers
and the environment.
